When you think of herbs, which ones come to mind? I typically think of the most common ones, like rosemary and basil. Ever since I started working on the farm, however, I have learned that there's a bunch more herbs out there that are even better. Let's learn more about some of these fantastic herbs!

Tarragon

Tarragon may be one of the most interesting herbs out there. Known for its unique flavor, it has an anise-like, licorice taste to it. That might make you wonder how you can use it, right? Tarragon is commonly used in French cuisine, mostly seen with poultry, vegetables, and fish. This leafy green herb can give any dish a fresh, spring flavor. When cooking with it, you should add it close to the end of the process to keep the flavor nice and bright.

Peppermint

Fragrant and aromatic, peppermint is a natural hybrid of watermint and spearmint. Peppermint is mostly used in beverages and desserts, including ice cream and candy. Not only can it be used in the kitchen, but it can be used to make Peppermint oil. This oil is known to help with digestive issues, headaches, and nausea. Peppermint is so refreshing and cooling that it goes great in teas, which is my favorite use of the herb.

Chocolate Mint

Chocolate Mint is an herb I had never heard of before and boy was I missing out! There's so many great uses for this variety of mint. You can add it into drinks, desserts, and even make a delicious simple syrup with it. Brownies and sorbet, tea and hot chocolate, there's so many things you can do with Chocolate Mint!

Anise Hyssop

A very versatile herb, Anise Hyssop can be used in the culinary and medicinal worlds. For the kitchen, much like the Tarragon, it has a licorice like flavor. The seeds can be added to sweets like cookies and muffins, too! Known for being used for infusions and tea, Anise Hyssop has plenty of medicinal uses. Tea made from the herb's leaves may help with respiratory problems like coughs and colds.

Lemon Balm

Best known for its lemony flavor, this herb is actually a part of the mint family. Lemon Balm tends to go well with salads, sauce, and teas. However, it is most commonly used for its health benefits. From stress and anxiety relief to insomnia to digestive issues, this herb has a lot of amazing benefits.

These are some of the herbs you can find on the Chocolates and Tomatoes Farm! Come see what we have each week at the Saturday Market from Mid-May to Mid-September, 9am-1pm. Take this opportunity to try something new!
